TERESA - PINE CREEK RAILROAD

Follow Lenny and Teresa to Custard Apple where Lenny would camp and hide as a boy in the caves and where the Wagiman would go on holiday. From there we journey to the MacDonald Airfield and learn about life during the war . We will then journey into the Burrundie area looking for important sources of water from long ago and today.

Join us as we explore the NTWP with Wagiman Elders Lenny and Teresa. Here we will learn the Wagiman names and significance of the many animals that are vital to the lives, culture and survival of the Indigenous peoples of the Top End.

Listen to Lenny and Teresa talk about their lives working and living on the Dorisvale cattle station and how they escaped the flood that occurred here years ago.

LENNY - SAWMILL

​

Lenny talks about working and camping at Sawmill across the Daly River and how there is a an old saltie croc that still lives in a billabong nearby.

​

TERESA, JABUL, IVY -  SAWMILL

​

Teresa talks about how they like to camp and eat bushtucker at Sawmill along Dorisvale Road. We also find a hawk in a nearby tree. This species is a "cheeky" one as it likes to light bushfires in order to catch prey. Jabul then shows us his "summer" house where he and Ivy would vacation and how they lived there to escape the Katherine flood years ago.

Teresa and Lenny talk about camping here years ago, tourism there now, and the local flora and fauna.

Teresa and Lenny talk about working in the area and what the pub was like back in their day.

Teresa and Lenny visit the Hawkhide up in the hills of Burrundie where there are also remnants of a track the Chinese used when making the railway. We also visit some old camping spots and talk about the local flora and fauna..

​

**NO SOUND** BUTTERFLY GORGE

​

We hike to the top of Butterfly Gorge and gaze out onto the land that Lenny and the other Wagiman used to walk and hunt. Looking straight out you can see where the river runs as it is extra green there and there is no other water for miles until you hit the ocean..

​

Teresa tells her daughter Yvonne about how they used to camp and look for tucker along the Old highway.

 

Jabul also explains how the different Indigenous groups of the area used to do Wangi here in the past when crossing each other's borders.

Teresa and Jabul show Yvonne and Sophie where they used to live in Adelaide River. Jabul tells us about the weeds in the area and how they need to clean the place up. 

TERESA, JABUL AND DAPHNE - CLARAVALE ROAD AND SHILLING HOLE

The Wagiman Elders take us along Claravale Road and show us where they used to get tucker at a peanut farm and  Shilling Hole. We also learn about where the cheeky Garkine hawk hides his firesticks in bad weather. We also find some important rocks for making axes along the way.

TERESA, JABUL AND YVONNE - BAN BAN SPRINGS/ FOUNTAINHEAD ROAD

Follow Jabul, Teresa and Yvonne as they record their stories along the old Ban Ban road towards the old Ban Ban Springs cattle station where Jabul and Teresa talk about working there in the old days and loading cattle onto the train. We finish up at Grove Hill pub and talk about how Lenny used to live and work around there.
